PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN NIGERIA
PHYSICAL EDUCATION E-CLASS COORDINATED BY MRS BLESSING TITILOYE PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN NIGERIA There is no proper documentation of the origin of Physical Education in Nigeria before the coming of colonial masters in 1900. But like other primitive people, Nigerians have been engaging in some form of Physical Education in an informal fashion. Some of these activities include traditional wrestling, hunting, fishing. swimming (Argungu Fishing Festival), ayo game, moonlight play, social dances, and war dances. The idea of PT (Physical Training) came to Nigeria through the colonial masters when the control of the country was taken over by the British. Physical Training was then limited to training the body alone especially for the local police force, soldiers, and the natives that were drafted to the teachers training schools who were in turn saddled with the task of preparing their pupils for some games and athletics for the "Empire Day".
