Definition of Recreation Recreation can be defined as participation in sporting activities during leisure hours through which he or she may better develop physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. It is voluntary participation in which no monetary gain is expected. There are many forms of recreational activities but before an activity can be regarded as recreational the following five characteristics must be present: worthwhileness, social acceptability, leisure activity, inherent satisfaction and voluntary participation.

Greeks respected and looked up to their gods and dead heroes as influencing powers in their successes. Among the festivals which were in the form of sports competitions are: I.      Olympia festival or ancient Olympic festival held every four years ii.      Pythia festival held every four years in honour of Pythian Appollo (the god of prophecy and truth). iii.

It is believed that the Chinese were the first people to develop activities that resembled gymnastics. The word gymnasium is also a Greek word for a place where gymnastic activities are performed. Fredrick Ludwig Jahn is known as the father of modern gymnastics. NATURE OF GYMNASTICS The performance commences when the gymnast raises his hand to indicate "readiness" and comes to an end when he raises the two hands to signal the end of the performance. Naismith was a Physical Education instructor at the International Young Men’s Christian Association Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. The game is played by two teams of five players each. The game is started by a centre jump ball. It was first played during the Berlin Olympic Games in 1936. It is an observable shift of the body from one position to the other. Rhythmic patterns are used for the expression of the performers feeling or for illustration of figures and shapes conceived in the mind of the performer. It is expected that proper mastery of the various styles of movement is vital for efficiency in basic and complex movements in physical education The origin of dance can be traced to early men.
