Definition of Recreation
Recreation can
be defined as participation in sporting activities during leisure hours through
which he or she may better develop physically, mentally, emotionally and
socially. It is voluntary participation in which no monetary gain is
expected.
There are many forms of recreational activities but before an activity can be regarded as recreational the following five characteristics must be present: worthwhileness, social acceptability, leisure activity, inherent satisfaction and voluntary participation.
Factors that influence the choice of activity
The choice of
recreational activities are influenced by many factors among which are: interest,
needs, capability/ability, financial status/economy, somatotype, social status,
climate/weather, culture, environment, health status, and the availability of
facilities and equipment.
What are the values of recreation?

use of leisure time

reduces juvenile delinquency/crimes

For
social integration

It develops socially acceptable behaviours
·
It
helps in physical development/physical fitness
·
It
gives an opportunity for creativity and individual expression
·
It
gives an opportunity for the development of sports skills

provides an opportunity for the release of tension

provides a forum for fun and enjoyment
Nature and scope of recreation
Recreation
covers a lot of activities which can be broadly grouped into two:
a) Indoor
recreational activities: These are activities that are performed inside the
house, hall, or in short under a roof. Examples are playing music, sewing drawing
and painting, watching television/video, reading and writing for pleasure,
dancing, playing cards, singing, playing ludo/draught/monopoly/snake and
ladder.
b) Outdoor recreational activities: These are activities that are performed outside or in the open e.g. parks, game reserves, or beaches. Examples are walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, hiking, camping, gardening, fishing, canoeing, mountaineering, horse riding, and playing games such as table tennis.
