WHAT IS A TOURNAMENT?
A tournament can be referred to as series of competitive participation in sports/games between two players/teams or more, to determine the winner.
FACTORS THAT DETERMINE THE CHOICE OF TOURNAMENT
- the purpose of the tournament
- the time limit
- the type of competition
- the number of teams / players
- the number of available officials
- the facilities and equipment available
- the age, interest and ability of the players
- the weather/ climate
- the available finance (money)
TYPES OF TOURNAMENT
1. straight or single elimination tournaments (knockout)
2. double elimination tournament
3. round robin tournament
STRAIGHT OR SINGLE
ELIMINATION TOURNAMENTS
ADVANTAGES OF SINGLE ELIMINATION TOURNAMENT
It saves time because
only winners continue to play.
It saves money because
many officials are not needed.
It is quick
It is exciting
It is easy to organize
It is suitable when
large numbers of players/teams are involved.
Few officials are
required
Involves few facilities and equipment
Encourages high determination in players
DISADVANTAGES OF STRAIGHT ELIMINATION TOURNAMENT
It does not allow the selection of the second and third place.
Participants are not allowed enough time to prove their worth.
DOUBLE ELIMINATION
TOURNAMENT
In this type of tournament, a team/ player is allowed two defeats before being eliminated. Teams play more matches than in straight elimination tournament. Losers matches are organized for the losers to determine the second and third place winners.

ROUND ROBIN TOURNAMENT
This can be referred to as league and probably the most widely used tournament because it ensures maximum participation. In this type of tournament, each team plays every other team at least once during the tournament. Point system is adopted to determine the winner. A winner scores three points, loser scores zero point and draw attracts one point apiece.
