TOURNAMENTS

WHAT IS A TOURNAMENT?

A tournament can be referred to as series of competitive participation in sports/games between two players/teams or more, to determine the winner.

FACTORS THAT DETERMINE THE CHOICE OF TOURNAMENT

  •     the purpose of the tournament
  •     the time limit
  •     the type of competition
  •     the number of teams / players
  •     the number of available officials
  •     the facilities and equipment available
  •     the age, interest and ability of the players
  •     the weather/ climate
  •     the available finance (money)

TYPES OF TOURNAMENT

            1.     straight or single elimination tournaments (knockout)

2.     double elimination tournament

3.     round robin tournament

STRAIGHT OR SINGLE ELIMINATION TOURNAMENTS

In this type of tournament, teams or players are paired to play for the first round i.e. the player/team is allowed only once, and the loser of the pair is out of the competition or can be said to have been eliminated.

ADVANTAGES OF SINGLE ELIMINATION TOURNAMENT

It saves time because only winners continue to play.
It saves money because many officials are not needed.

     It is quick
     It is exciting

     It is easy to organize
It is suitable when large numbers of players/teams are involved.

     Few officials are required

     Involves few facilities and equipment

     Encourages high determination in players

      DISADVANTAGES OF STRAIGHT ELIMINATION TOURNAMENT

It does not allow the selection of the second and third place.

Participants are not allowed enough time to prove their worth.

DOUBLE ELIMINATION TOURNAMENT

In this type of tournament, a team/ player is allowed two defeats before being eliminated. Teams play more matches than in straight elimination tournament. Losers matches are organized for the losers to determine the second and third place winners.

TEAM A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H compete in the tournament. Winners move to the winning side while losers move to the losing side. You must be defeated twice before been eliminated. However, the winner D at the winning side plays winner F at the losing side for the final.

ROUND ROBIN TOURNAMENT

This can be referred to as league and probably the most widely used tournament because it ensures maximum participation. In this type of tournament, each team plays every other team at least once during the tournament. Point system is adopted to determine the winner. A winner scores three points, loser scores zero point and draw attracts one point apiece.
