Violence in Sports

Violence can be defined as unsociable behaviour characterized by wanton destruction of lives and properties. This shameful act is usually carried out by hooligans, riff-raffs, school drop-outs and surprisingly fanatical elite fans during sports and games. Violence in sports otherwise called hooliganism in sports has become a focus worldwide social problem and a common occurrence in Lagos state in particular and Nigeria as a whole to the extent that sports meetings are organized amidst tight security.

   

     

    


    

Causes of Sports Violence

·        Poor officiating and ineffective officials/partiality of officials.

·        Poor sportsmanship/rough play by the players.

·        Communication gap/bad coverage by news media (print and electronics).

·        Win at all cost syndrome

·        Lack of adequate knowledge on the rules and laws that guide the game

·        Ignorant spectators often feel cheated when officials call players of their team to order because they lack the knowledge and do not fully understand the rules that govern the game.

·        Poor seating arrangement.

·        Influence of alcohol and drugs

·        Players’ poor sportsmanship

·        Closeness or wideness of score line

·        Inflamed rivalry

·        Overcrowded conditions

·        Lack of spectator barrier

·        Unbridled fanaticism

·        Poor organization

·        Overzealousness of the coaching crew

·        Lack of proper facilities

·        Absence of law enforcement agents

·        Nationalism/patriotism

 The way forward to control violence in sports
