○
Concept of Recreation
■ Definition:
Recreation is voluntary participation in wholesome, non-profit athletic,
creative, or physical activities during leisure time (off-work/off-school
hours) for self-expression, refreshment, and holistic development.
■ Five
Essential Characteristics of Recreation:
1.
Voluntary participation
(never forced).
2.
Done during free/leisure
time.
3.
Motivated by inherent
satisfaction and fun (no monetary reward expected).
4.
Socially acceptable and
constructive.
5.
Worthwhile to the
individual and community.
○ Factors
Influencing Choice of Recreation: Personal interest, physical
health/somatotype, financial capability, age, climate/weather, cultural
beliefs, availability of facilities/equipment, and available leisure time.
○
Values of Recreation
■ Physical/Health:
Improves cardiovascular endurance, muscle tone, weight control, and overall
physical fitness.
■ Mental/Emotional:
Provides tension release, stress relief, and opportunities for mental alertness
and creative thinking.
■ Social:
Promotes friendship, teamwork, civic responsibility, and curtails youth
delinquency and crime rates.

Scope and Categorization
■ Indoor
Recreation: Activities undertaken inside protective structures/halls. Examples: Scrabble, Chess, Ludo, Table
Tennis, Snooker, Dancing, Reading for pleasure, Playing musical instruments.
■ Outdoor
Recreation: Activities conducted in open-air environments, parks, or
natural bodies of water. Examples:
Jogging, Hiking, Swimming, Camping, Gardening, Cycling, Fishing,
Mountaineering.

Brainstorming session where students list their daily routine and isolate true
leisure time.
○ Activity 2:
Categorization game where students group various leisure pursuits into indoor
vs. outdoor recreation on the whiteboard.

Practical demonstration using indoor board games to show how recreation
stimulates strategic thinking and stress relief.
