                               TENNIS                            

Tennis was originally called Lawn tennis when the playing was done on lawns only. The name was changed to Tennis when the playing court included


clay
, asphalt, and cement. The game was introduced to England in 1873 by Major Walter Clopton Wingfield. It was introduced to the United States in 1875 by Mary Ewing Outerbridge of Staten Island, New York. The game is popular in most countries of the world.


Some international competitions in Tennis include:

      1.     Davis Champions Cup (donated by Dwight Davis in 1900) for men only

      2.     Wimbledon Tournament in England

      3.     Wight man cup competition for females only

The game of Tennis was introduced to Nigeria by the early missionaries and colonial masters. The game is played for both competition and recreation.

Some tennis competitions in Nigeria include:

      1.     Kaduna Clay Court

      2.     Ogun Green Court

      3.     Ogbe Hard Court

      4.     Lord Rumens Competition

      5.     Premier Hard Court Port-Harcourt 

These competitions are attended by international and local players. 

Some notable Nigerian players include: - Herbert Oranye; Lawrence Awopegba; Thompson Onibokun; Patrick Obi; Walter Obianwu; Nduka Odizor; David Imonite; Tony Nmoh; Olagbegi Brothers

     5.     Knowledge of the rules

     7.     Sportsmanship

     8.     Accuracy 

Facilities and equipment

They are: 

     1.     The playing court

     2.     The net

     3.     The balls

     4.     The white 'T' shirt over white shorts

     5.     The canvas shoes 

     6.     The racket

     7.     The towel

     8.   The racket

There are no rules affecting the specification of the racket. Rackets were originally made of wood, but now virtually all rackets are made of materials such as aluminum, graphite, carbon fiber, which are stronger and lighter than wood.

The Court specification

      1.     Single court is 23.8m by 8.2m.

      2.     Doubles court is 23.8m by 11 m.

      3.     The space at the side between singles and doubles is called "Alley" and it is 1.4m               wide height of the net at the centre is 0.9m.

       4.     The post and height of the net at the post is 1.07m.

       5.     The distance between the base line and the service line is 5.48m

       6.     The distance between the service line and the net is 6.4 m.

       7.     The net post is 0.915m to the side line.

Types of play

Tennis can be played as singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

Singles game is a play between two players of the same gender (sex).

One player occupying each side of the net

Doubles game is a play of pairing four players of the same gender (sex).

Two players occupying each side of the net

Mixed doubles game is a play between a male and female forming a team against another team of a male and female. One male and female occupying each side of the net.

Skills and techniques

The fundamental skills are the grip, the serve, the court positioning and stance; then footwork.


 There are different types of strokes, they include

       1.     The forehand drive/stroke 

       2.     The backhand drive/stroke

       3.     The volley

       4.     The lobs

       5.     The half volley

       6.     The drop shot

       7.     The spin

       8.     The net shot

       9.     The smash

 10.  The grip

There are about three types of grip

      1.     The continental grip

      2.     The eastern grip

      3.     The western grip

                       Terminologies of tennis

Ace: a service which eludes the receiver; a service too hot for the receiver to return

Out: a ball that lands outside the playing area.

Seeding is placing the best players in a drawn tournament in such a way that they do not play against each other in the early rounds/preliminary.

Love: no score

Mixed doubles: this is when a pair of male and female players play against another pair of male and female players.

A let: a serve that does not count; a served ball that touches the net and falls over into the opponent's court; a point that is to be replayed; a ball served when the receiver is not ready.

A rally: a series of shot/strokes in which players keep the ball in play.
